Jesus gets Baptised
A brief outline of the baptism story and why we have it;
John the Baptist was the cousin of Jesus and he was born filled with the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist grew up to be a priest and used his life to spread the 'Good News' - the word of God. He showed his faith by performing baptismal ceremonies in the River Jordan, helping people to wash away their sins.
The importance of this story is that one day Jesus came to John and asked to be baptised. John who recognised Jesus as the Son of God, refused as he knew Jesus was free of sin; he felt Jesus should be the one to be baptising him. Jesus said, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness". John baptised Jesus and he rose from the water, the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in the form of a dove. God spoke "This is my son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” It is here that the Holy Trinity became present, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This is why we say, "I bless you in the name of The Father and of The son and The Holy Spirit".
The significance of this story-
· Jesus was confessing sin on behalf of the people
· Endorsing John the Baptist's Ministry of Baptism
· Setting an example to his followers, to wash away their sin and begin a life of faith in God.
· The Holy Spirit was present- Jesus was the Messiah sent by God to save humanity.
When we get baptised we are accepting the Holy Spirit in our life
· Through baptism we become enlightened, children of God, choosing to walk into the light of Christ.
· Baptism - initiation into the Catholic Church and Catholic Faith
